Make Starfield look like Morrowind & get a big performance boost on top.

TL;DR

open the in-game console using the tilde key ~ and type in ToggleLiteBrite to enable/disable the script. Would love to hear how this affects other rigs, I have a free comment section at the bottom of the page, no sign-up necessary.

Starfield is out, and there are already countless articles about troubleshooting and tweaks for a multitude of system setups, whether you're team blue, green or red(Intel, Nvidia and AMD for the uninitiated.)

This game truly is a monster especially for those on older hardware like me running on a 1080 TI/i7-8700K. My PC sounds like it's about to launch into orbit while I'm playing Starfield, unless I'm in a closed off area where it isn't rendering the open-world.

"gpuId" : "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070",
"defaultQuality" : "medium"

HAH, MEDIUM? I CAN COOK A STEAK ON MY GPU

I realize the gif is of a CPU - sry, not cooking raw meat on my GPU

For reference, here's a before and after, both pictures are using the same in-game settings with the default medium preset for my GPU - which has FSR2 enabled(something I normally turn off), not sure if that's the case for all medium presets.

No mods necessary

No need to modify or create .ini files, modify system-wide GPU settings or inject files from a mod/add-on. You may not notice huge gains in FPS in large outdoor areas/hub cities, but if you're on a mission and you enter an indoor facility and need to aim without the FPS dipping to 20 FPS, this may help.

This is a sure-fire way of loosening up the vice-grip Starfield has around your system resources' neck. The only downside being the game is gonna look like assssssss(while toggled on).

Always make a backup

If you're worried about achievements being disabled, you can always create a backup of your save found in:

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Starfield

I'd turn off Steam Cloud saves whenever I'm attempting these with a "clean" backup, this goes for scripts and mods. There are mods that have work-around methods to re-enable achievements, but as of writing I haven't found one that works on the current patched release.

More to come / other console commands?

More Starfield stuff coming soon, if you're interested in tinkering with the in-game console for settings and scripts other than cheats - the only topic publications seem to be discussing right now - it's not very difficult to navigate. Just use help + "string" 1(to print out console commands and scripts only).

A large majority of these "cheats"(console commands) work in Starfield, however I've been trying to find commands that don't break the game, just change settings that are available on most other modern games like toggling SAO or LOD distance.

Example of using the command line to find console commands using the 1 filter for functions
